Damian Obidowski has been associated with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering since the beginning of his studies. In 1999, he completed his engineering degree in Mechatronics within the Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering program at the International Faculty of Engineering at Lodz University of Technology, and two years later, he graduated with honors with a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering. He defended his doctoral thesis on blood flow analysis in 2007, the same year, he was employed at the Institute of Turbomachinery, where he has been affiliated ever since. He received his postdoctoral degree for achievements related to the numerical modelling and evaluation of blood flow inside prosthetic hearts and in the human circulatory system in 2018. Since 2019, he has been employed as a university professor in the research and teaching staff group. In 2019, he developed his competences and skills in modern teaching methods and tutoring by participating in the ‘Masters of Didactics’ project carried out in Aarhus, Denmark. As a continuation of this project implemented by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in 2022-23, he completed an advanced part of the training led by academics from the University of Groningen.
Since 2020, he has served as Chairperson of the Council for Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Master in Mechanical Engineering (MME). He was responsible for changing teaching methods at the master's level for English-language MME studies and collaborated on restructuring parts of second-degree programs at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He has supervised over twenty engineering and master's theses and has acted as an auxiliary supervisor in three doctoral proceedings.
In his scientific development related to flow modeling, he conducts research focused on flow analyses in the human circulatory system and heart prostheses. Another significant area of interest for Damian Obidowski is aerodynamics related to wind turbines and propellers. He is the author or co-author of over 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including five book chapters and 40 publications indexed in Scopus. He has frequently presented research findings at international conferences.
His achievements in implementation and collaboration with industry include authorship and co-authorship of over 80 research reports and expert opinions for several companies from Poland and abroad. Since 2020, he has represented Lodz University of Technology on the Partners Council of the Advanced Technology Center "AERONET - Aviation Valley."
He is a member of a team awarded a silver medal at the International Warsaw Invention Show for the solution: "Determination of flow structure within the vascular structure of the patient." Along with another team, he received a gold medal at Indonesia Inventors Day for the solution: "Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with Variable Blade Geometry." He is a co-author of nine patents, including six European ones. He has worked as an expert for the National Centre for Research and Development in evaluating eight research funding applications.
He has led and coordinated team efforts in several scientific and educational projects and has been involved as a contractor in 15 grants. Currently, he participates in two international scientific projects as well as one educational project.
In 2019, he was appointed a member of the Mechanical Engineering Discipline Council and was elected to a collegial body: the Council for Academic Degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Engineering at Lodz University of Technology. In September 2024, he was appointed Vice-Dean for Development, and since October of the same year he has served as Vice-Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Discipline Council.
